2) At the close of an auction that you have won or were the seller in, all your contact information will be sent to the winning bidder and/or seller so that the bidder will know where to send payment and the seller will know where to ship the item.  No one else will have access to your registration information and the Lily Auction does not give-out or sell information about any of its users, except where mandated by State or Federal law or as indicated in the Users Agreement.

If your contact information changes, please update your registration immediately. Any user found to have a dead email address or incorrect mailing address will have their registration suspended until the correct information is received. You can update your personal information by using the Change Registration form. As with most functions of the Lily Auction, the Change Registration form can be located from a link at the bottom of the Lily Auction pages. This form allows you to change your Password, Email Address and all Contact information. However, the form does not allow you to change your username. Please be sure that you select the username that you wish to keep. In most cases it is not recommended but if you wish to change your username, you must have no current bids or listings on the Lily Auction and may contact contact the Auctioneer. Whenever a username is changed, your feedback record will also be moved to the new username.

Bidding Instructions:
Bidding on the Lily Auction is easy and it is also free. There are 2 stages of bidding:

  • Review bid: Open the auction that you want to bid on by clicking on its name in the item list. After reviewing the description of the item and you are sure that you want to place a bid, you can do so by scrolling down the page, just past the "Bid History", to the "Bidding" section.  You can also get to the bidding section by clicking on the "bid" icon on the left side of the screen near the top of the item page, just above the written description of the item. In the "Bidding" Form  you can enter your username, password and bid amount in the labeled boxes and then click the "review bid" button.  Please type only numerals and the decimal point (if required). Do not include a dollar sign ('$') or commas (',').

  • Place bid:  After you click on the "review bid" button, you will then see the details of your bid on the next screen. If you agree with the bid details, scroll down and click on the "Place bid" button. If you do not agree then you can use your back arrow to go back and correct your bid amount or not place the bid at all. Once you click on the "Place bid" button, please wait until you receive confirmation that your bid has been placed. This may take a few seconds. Once you press the "Place Bid" button, please allow 'Lilybot', the auction robot, a few seconds to process your bid. Do not click the "Place Bid" button more than once.

Binding Contract

Placing a bid is a binding contract in many states. Do not bid unless you intend to buy this item at the amount of your bid.

Proxy bidding for all bids

Please bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay for this item. Your maximum amount will be kept secret. The Auction robot, Lilybot, will bid on your behalf as necessary by increasing your bid by the current bid increment up until your maximum is reached. This saves you the trouble of having to keep track of the auction as it proceeds and prevents you from being outbid at the last minute unless your spending limit is exceeded.
There are 2 important things to remember when placing your maximum bid:
1) If your max bid exceeds the previous bidder's maximum bid, your displayed bid will jump to one increment above the previous bidder's max bid.
2) If your max bid is equal to the previous bidder's max bid, the previous user's bid will take precedence. In case of a tie for high bidder, earlier bids always take precedence.
When an opposing bidder places a bid higher than an existing actual displayed bid but the bid is less than the previous bidder's maximum bid, Lilybot will enter a new proxy bid for the previous user. The new proxy bid will be displayed at the amount that was bid by the opposing bidder and there will be a "Bumped by:" note next to it naming the alias of the opposing bidder. This tells the existing bidder why their bid was increased and it also tells the opposing bidder that their bid has not exceeded the existing bidders maximum bid. Also, an opposing bid will not be counted unless it is higher than the previous bidders maximum bid. In other words your bid will not count as a bid unless it exceeds the previous bidders maximum. If it is lower or equal in amount, it will only "bump up" the previous bidders proxy bid. However, you can bid as many times as you like if you want to continue to try to out-bid the previous bidder. Just remember that each time you bid, you will have to bid a higher amount. You obviously do not want to exceed what you feel is the value of the item. The best approach is to simply enter the maximum bid that you feel you are willing to pay for the item and let the proxy bidding system work for you.
Lilybot will never place your bid higher than your maximum amount. Be sure that you enter the maxbid that you can live with. You cannot reduce your maximum bid at a later date.

If you have bid on this item before, note that your new bid must be greater than your previous bid. If you are the high bidder, and wish to raise your maximum bid you may now enter a bid higher than your previous max bid without raising your actual displayed bid. Of course, as stated above, if your max bid equals or exceeds the seller's reserve, your bid will jump to the reserve amount.

Instant Buy "Bidding":

Bidding on 'Instant Buy' Items is simple and straight forward. There is no proxy bidding and the price is the same for every count listed in the auction. 'Instant Buy' Items are always offered at a fixed price and the purchase is instant.  When a seller adds a Store Item and lists, say, 10 counts of the same item, every count will be the same price (determined by the seller). You get to choose only the quantity that you want to buy. You may choose one, all, or as many as are left in the auction at the time you are bidding. The auction will not let you bid on more than are available.

In the bidding section of each auction you select only the quantity that you wish to buy and then once you click on the "Buy" button, you have bought the item. There is no confirmation screen in Instant Buy bidding. At that time an email notification will be sent to both the buyer and seller and the item will then be listed in the Closed Auctions Lists for your records. This notification will list the quantity you bought as well as the seller's contact information. The seller will receive your contact information and quantity you bought as well.  At this point, the buyer and seller need to contact each other to make the necessary arrangements. If both buyer and seller agree, the transaction may be consummated immediately. You do not have to wait until the item closes.

In addition to keeping track of all items that you won through the Lily Auction, the auction specifically keeps track of all your Instant Buys and records all information about them in your closed auctions list. The Lily Auction's automated system, Lilybot, will immediately send out winning notifications to both Buyer and Seller.  If for some reason, after you have bid, you do not get the email notification within 10 minutes, please check your closed auctions for the information you need to complete the transaction. The closed auction will automatically be placed in your closed auctions list within 10 minutes after close.

After the auction has closed,  click on the "View Your Closed Auctions" link at the bottom of all the Lily Auction pages to get to the closed auction lists and look for the INSTANT BUY ITEMS YOU WON list. Sellers will find the Instant Buy information they need in their INSTANT BUY ITEMS YOU SOLD list.

Reverse Auction Bidding:
Bidding in Reverse Auctions is exactly the reverse of the bidding  instructions above for standard auctions:

  • Items listed are Items wanted, not items to be sold
  • The lister of the auction is the Buyer. Buyers list items that they want in an attempt to find a seller who can supply them.
  • It is a potential sellers who place the bids. A sellers who has an item that is listed may bid on the items and agree to supply the lister/buyer with the item.
  • The winning bidder pays the closing percentage fees. The closing fees are explained in the Terms and Conditions.
  • The bid increment is 25 cents, Down.
  •  Each successive bid is lower than the previous bid.
  • At the end of the auction it is the lowest bid that wins. The winning bidder is the seller, and who will supply the item wanted.
  • In a Reverse Auction, your proxy bid, is your minimum bid rather than your maximum bid. Your minimum bid means the lowest amount that you are willing to sell the item for.
  • Be sure that you consider the closing auctions fees that will be charged to your seller account in considering your minimum bid. The closing fees are explained in the Terms and Conditions.
  • A previous proxy bid is bumped down by  a subsequent bidder.
  • A bid in a Reverse Auction  means that you are willing to supply the wanted item to the lister/buyer of the auction for the amount of your bid. This is a binding contract.
  •  If your minimum bid is lower than the previous bidder's minimum bid, your displayed bid will drop to one increment below the previous bidder's minimum bid.
  • If your minimum bid is equal to the previous bidder's minimum bid, the previous user's bid will take precedence. In case of a tie for low bidder, earlier bids always take precedence.
  • If you have bid on this item before, note that your new bid must be lower than your previous bid.
  •  If you are the low bidder, and wish to lower your minimum bid, you may enter a bid lower than your previous minimum bid without lowering your actual displayed bid.
  • The SellitNow option works exactly the same as the BuyItNow option except, again, the winner is the Seller.

Buy-It-Now: (optional)

Buy It Now allows a buyer to purchase a regular auction item immediately at a set price that is listed by the seller. The Lily Auction 'Buy-It-Now' feature is a little different than the same feature in other auctions.

Here how it works:

  • In the bidding section of each item the first bidder has the option to either bid or buy in every auction whose seller has selected the 'buyitnow' option.
  • If the buyer chooses to bid, then the buy it now feature is taken off and is no longer
available. The auction continues but no one can 'buyitnow' and the auction will proceed as usual.
  • If the first bidder decides to 'buyitnow', then the auction is immediately closed and taken off the list. Both the buyers and the sellers will get email notifications and the auction file will be sent to the closed auction directory.

Like anything else, there are pros and cons to the 'buy it now' feature. Sellers and Buyers must consider the item that is being offered and if it is wise to use the 'buy it now' option or not. For example: Hybridizers and nurserypersons, who have several of one item to offer, may choose to list the 'buyitnow' option. However, if an item is in demand and there are only a few available...........a regular auction is likely to do better!

Once an item is listed with the "buyitnow" option, It is the first bidder who decides to either purchase the plant now, at the 'Buyitnow' price, or to place a bid on the item for a lower amount. Doing the later removes the 'buyitnow' option and the auction proceeds, from that point on, as a regular auction.

Pros for Buy it Now:

Buyers Sellers
Buy items instantly! Sell your items fast.
Quick, easy, and convenient way to shop. Quick, easy, and convenient way to sell.
Buy an item at a fair price. Sell your item for the price you want.

Search Help

The entire search function was changed on 09/12/07. Please read the (new) sections below to note changes in the search features.

The Search function of the Lily Auction was designed for ease of use and to help you narrow down the item list so that you may find what you are looking for faster than going through the whole list. You may either search the OPEN items or  search the CLOSED items by entering your search word in either the "Search OPEN" form or the "Search CLOSED" form, both of which are located at the top of all the Lily Auction pages. How to select a search word is explained below.

(new) There are 10 search modes: "Keyword", "Alias", "Bidder",  "Seller",  "Form", "Country/State",  "Foliage", "Item Number" "Will Ship to Canada" and "Ships Internationally",.   The first 8 modes search  all items but each mode searches a different part of each item. The last 2 Modes are really not searches, but a way to list Items based whether the Seller's will ship to Canada or Internationally or not. You must select one of the 10 modes by selecting it from the drop down menu, BEFORE you submit your search. Selecting the appropriate option will determine what part of all items will be searched.

1) The "Keyword" mode searches for a matching word in the "title" and also the entire "description" of each item and then displays a list of all the items that contain that word in the description. Common words to select when using the "Keyword" mode are, Cultivar name, Hybridizer name, color words, small, large, tetraploid, etc. You can use any word that you think would be in the title or description of an item you are looking for. Certain words may return large lists, others small lists. Many times this search will only help narrow down the items that contain what you are looking for. However, if you input the name of a Cultivar, the result will be very specific and it will then return a list of only those items that have that exact name in the description and/or title.

2) The "Alias" mode searches for a matching letters in ONLY the username section of all items. This mode will help you find both sellers and buyers. However, while this mode will only search the usernames, it is not absolutely specific.  For example, if you are searching for a user whose alias is "Blue", you would enter the word "Blue" in the search field and click on the "alias" radio button and then submit the form. However, not only the auctions of the user "Blue" will be returned but also all usernames with the word blue in them, will be returned. This can be helpful for users who can't remember the entire username if the user they are looking for.  If you wish to search specifically for a seller then you must use the "Seller" mode. The "Alias" search mode is only available in the open items search. The closed items  searches for username are only available to the 'winning bidders' and 'sellers' who participated in those auctions and must be done through the "View Your Closed Auction" link at the bottom of the Lily Auction pages.

3) The "Seller" mode searches specifically for sellers and is absolutely specific.  You must spell the seller's username correctly for this to work. The "Seller" search mode is only available in the open auctions.

4) The "Bidder" mode searches specifically for bidders and is absolutely specific.  You must spell the bidder's username correctly for this to work. The "Bidder" search mode is only available in the open auctions.

5) The "Country/State" mode (new) searches specifically for the Seller's Country or State.  Most (but not all) USA Sellers enter the abbreviation for the name of their State, ie, CT, IN, OH etc. so you will probably need to enter the abbreviation for States in this search mode. Also, if you enter the name of a country, ie Canada, this search will list all sellers from that country. This is not case sensitive.  This search mode is only available in the open auctions.

6) The "Form" mode searches only 7 words, one of which was pre-selected by the seller when he or she posted their auctions and that relate to the bloom form. The 7 word choices are  "Large", "Mini", "Small",  "Double", "Spider", "Variant" and "Mixed".  For this mode to work properly, you must enter one of these exact word choices. The "Mixed" option is used when more than one cultivar is being offered in one auction, and the bloom form is not consistent among all cultivars offered. This option is not available in the CLOSED auction search.

7) The "Foliage" mode searches only 5 words, one of which was pre-selected by the seller when he or she posted their auctions and that relate to the foliage habit of the plant offered. The 5 word choices are   "Ev", "Se", "Dor", "Not-known" and "Mixed".  Please note, you must search on Ev, Se, or Dor, exact letters, only as the complete words evergreen, semi-evergreen and dormant, or other abbreviations will not work properly. Again, the "Mixed" option is used when more than one cultivar is being offered in one auction, and the foliage habit is not consistent among all cultivars offered. This option is not available in the CLOSED auction search.

8) The "Item Number" mode simply searches for the item number. It is absolutely specific and, if that auction number is available, only one auction can be returned using this mode.

9) The "*Will Ship To Canada*" mode (new) will list all sellers who will ship to Canada....regardless of what you enter into the search form. Entering a space or one character is enough but you must enter something in the box or this will not work.  This search mode is only available in the open auctions.

10) The "*Ships Internationally*" mode  (new) will list all sellers who will ship Internationally....again, regardless of what you enter into the search form. Entering a space or one character is enough but you must enter something in the box or this will not work.  This search mode is only available in the open auctions.

PLEASE NOTE:
All lists in the lily auction are displayed in the order of which auction closes first or, in the case of closed auctions, which closed earliest. Closed auctions are kept in the Lily Auction system for approximately 2 months, after which they are moved to the archived auction.  Closed auctions then remain in the Archived auctions for an additional 6 months after which they will be deleted. If you need to get the contact information for buyers and sellers of specific closed auctions, then you must use the "View Your Closed Auctions" link at the bottom of all the Lily Auction pages.

Tips for Buyers

Buying items off the Internet can be a pretty unsettling experience. The Lily Auction is here to assist you in any way possible. We have compiled some tips of the trade to make your purchasing experience a pleasant one.

Be Familiar with the Item You Bid On
Details will take you a long way when it comes to purchasing an auction item. Read the description of the item very carefully. And don't read anything into the description that isn't there! E-mail the seller if you have questions. For example, if you are concerned with the number of number and size of the plant you would get and these facts are not mentioned in the seller's description, email the seller and specifically ask him , how many fans and what is the approximate diameter of the plant at the crown. You may be specific in your questions but please do not be unreasonable.

Protection From Fraud
The Lily Auction is the people’s garden trading community. Our mission is to promote a site that provides fair and honest trading with each auction. Unfortunately, online fraud is becoming an issue in the Internet auction industry as it is with online banking and cyber-shopping. In an effort to continue our good name and protect the buyers and sellers in the Lily Auction community, we want to clearly address our policy on fraud.

All auctions are subject to fraud. The bid process can be exposed to several dishonest practices. Bid shilling occurs when an individual schemes with someone else or creates a false identity in order to drive up the bidding prices on behalf of the seller. Bid shielding takes place when a buyer and partner artificially inflate the bids. This discourages other bidders from bidding. Then, at the last minute, the shielder cancels their high bid whereby his/her partner wins the auction with a lower offer.

Our stance on these practices is simple-- shilling and shielding will not be tolerated! In fact on the Lily Auction, unlike many other auctions, we do not allow our users to cancel a bid automatically. The cancellation must be reviewed by the auctioneer before the bid can actually be retracted. Generally, a bid will not be allowed to be retracted after 24 hours from when it was made nor within 24 hours of closing.

The Lily Auction has zero tolerance for fraud! After investigating a complaint and the allegations are found to be correct, our policy is to suspend the user on the first offense. We will also maintain a ban list to chronicle the errant users.

Self-regulation is the best prevention against fraud. We will make every effort to enforce our fraud policy and we encourage our Lily Auction community to join us. Please don’t hesitate to contact the auctioneer at mike@daylily.com whenever fraud is the issue. If you don’t complain, there exists a possibility that we don’t know. Let’s all take a stand!

For additional information about fraud, please consult the National Fraud Information Center (www.fraud.com).

Be Courteous to Other Traders
Being courteous and giving others the benefit of the doubt are essential elements for the Lily Auction community. We ask that everyone treat other traders like you want to be treated and we can't help but to have a pleasant trading community. "Flaming" and profanity are not tolerated on this site.

Do Your Homework!
First, check the current minimum bid price. This is the is the minimum amount that you must bid. Be certain that you are willing to pay the seller at least this amount for this item should you become the winning bidder. Please remember that placing a bid is a legally binding contract in many states.

Be sure that you have enough time to put in another bid should you get outbid. The Lily Auction items close at the closing time or 5 minutes after the last bid to prevent auction snipers. If you enter a maximum bid amount, the proxy bidding will place bids for you.

Get more information on the seller, particularly if this is a high-priced item. Review his/her Lily Auction seller rating and feedback. E-mail the seller if you need more information about the item you wish to bid on.

Monitoring the Auction
The bid history for an auction gives up-to-the-minute information about the bidding activity for the item. Always refresh the page to be sure you are viewing current information. Email notices are sent out to the buyer and seller immediately after all items close. Store Item Buys are sent to the Closed Auctions lists immediately. In the case of Auctions,  it may take up to 10 minutes before the closed item is placed in the closed auctions lists. The winning bidder and the seller's e-mail address, etc., are posted in the closed auctions. To prevent spamming, the winning bidder's contact information is available ONLY to the seller of the auction. Only the seller's email address is available to the public. The remainder of the seller's contact information is available only to the winning bidder of the auction.

The Lily Auction sends a confirmation e-mail to both the seller and the winning bidder immediately after all items close.  Some ISP's take longer than others to let your email through and there may be a delay. Spam filters can block our email notifications. Please be sure that Lilybot@daylily.com is listed as a friend in your spam filter. In the event you do not received the notice, you may always contact the other party using the contact information posted in your closed auctions lists.

Contact the Seller
As stated above,  the seller and winning bidder are notified via e-mail immediately after the item closes. The notice contains the e-mail address so that each party may contact the other. The winning bid history remains on the site indefinitely so it is the responsibility of all parties to verify who won. We request that all parties in the final sale contact each other immediately after the close of the auction. In the event the winning bidder does not contact the seller within 10 days, the seller reserves the right to re-list the item, leave negative feedback and/or sell the item to the second highest bidder.

Tips for Sellers

Selling merchandise on the Internet brings a totally different flavor to the typical merchant and consumer interaction. We've compiled some tips of the trade to make your selling experience a pleasant one.

Listing Items on the Lily Auction
Adding a new item to the Lily Auction is very easy. Just click on the "Add a New Item Here" link at the bottom of all the Lily Auction pages and start reading. The fees, terms and conditions and all the help you need will be explained as you go along. There are 3 "Add New Item" forms: 1) Quickpost, for more experienced users to use when listing Auction Items, 2) Storepost, for more experienced users to list Store Items with and 3) The Standard "Add New Item" form for new users. If this is the first time you are listing an item for sale or auction, please read the pages very carefully and select the link at the bottom of the first page to get to the Standard "Add New Item Form" that has more detailed instructions in it.

Details, details, details
There is no such thing as too much information. Give the consumer as many details as possible in anticipation of any questions that he/she may have.

We highly recommend that you include all the details related to shipping the merchandise-- i.e. where the item is located, who will pay for shipping, estimated weight, etc.

A Picture IS Worth a Thousand Words
"Seeing is believing" is putting it mildly. What better way to attract a buyer's attention than to display photographs of your item? That's why we have provided a place for you to upload your images if you have no web space of your own.

Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say
State how you want to be paid. If the item should be insured for shipping, state whether you'll pay the charges.

Don't End Your Auction Early
Some sellers list their items with more than one venue. This practice is not fair to the Lily Auctions or it's traders. If we detect a pattern of sellers ending their auctions early, we will be forced to reevaluate your presence in the trading community.

Be Courteous to Other Traders
Being courteous and giving others the benefit of the doubt are essential elements for the the Lily Auction community. We ask that everyone treat other traders like you want to be treated and we can't help but to have a pleasant trading community. "Flaming" and profanity are not tolerated on this site.

Don't Forget to Use Feedback
The feedback  option has a dual purpose. Buyers can read the comments other buyers have entered about a seller. Likewise, sellers can read the comments other sellers have placed about a buyer. We encourage all users to leave feedback  about your trading experience. Please do not abuse the privilege of posting feedback about others.

Contact the Buyer
The Lily Auction's Automated system, Lilybot, will e-mail the winning bidder and seller with contact information immediately after the item closes or store item is bought. The contact information of the winning bidder will also be available to the seller in the closed auctions lists within 10 minutes of auction close. We ask that all parties allow at least 10 days to receive communication from the other trader. In the event that the buyer refuses to follow-up after 10 days you may re-list the item or offer it to the second highest bidder.

Lily Auction COUNTERS
Optional Lily Auction Counters track the number of buyers who have viewed your listing. This is a useful tool for those sellers who want to track the number of unique visitors that their items have received.  Multiple views from the same user are counted only once so that the count is as accurate and meaningful as possible.

If the option is selected when listing your item, the counter will appear at the bottom of your listing and will be visible to all viewers, unless you have selected a Hidden Counter. Hidden Counters are available for sellers who do not want to publicly display the counter and, if a hidden counter is selected, it will only be viewable by the Seller when the seller is logged in.  However, all counters, including hidden counters, count every unique visit to your item. After auction close the counters remain static (will not add new views) and will be visible for at least 7 days when viewing the closed auction from your Closed Auctions Lists. They are never visible when viewing closed auctions from the searchCLOSED form. All Counters will automatically delete 7 days after the scheduled auction close date.

How does the Lily Auction determine bid increments?

The first bid increment is always $.01. After that the increment is determined by the amount of the existing bid. This is calculated by the auction.

After the first bid:
the increment is $.25, if the last bid is less than $5;
inc = $.50 if last bid > 4.99 but < 10;
inc = 1.00 if last bid > 9.99) but < 30;
inc = 1.50 if last bid > 29.99) but < 60;
inc = 2.00 if last bid > 59.99) but < 100;
inc = 3.00 if last bid > 99.99) but < 200;
inc = 4.00 if last bid > 199.99) but < 300;
inc = 5.00 if last bid > 299.99) but < 450;
inc = 6.00 if last bid > 449.99) but < 700;
inc = 10.00 if last bid > 699.99) but < 1000;

How do I add color, bold, Italics, etc. to my listing?

In the description field of the "Post new Item Form", you can add these dimensions to your ad by using HTML or HyperText Markup Language. HTML is a simple way to format text to be displayed on a web browser. HTML formats by using "tags" at the beginning and end of the text. For example, when entering your description in the "Post New Item" Form,  to make the words 'the Lily Auction' in bold, you would use the opening and closing tags for Bold. The opening tag for Bold is <B> and the closing tag for Bold is </B>. To change the Lily Auction to bold when viewed on the browser, you would enter:

<B>the Lily Auction</B>

To input Italics:

<I>the Lily Auction</I>

To input colors:

<FONT COLOR=BLUE>the Lily Auction</FONT>

To make the text bigger:

<h1>the Lily Auction</h1>

To make text smaller:

<h5>the Lily Auction</h5>

You can use any combination of the above tags. For a more in depth description of HTML, use a search engine to access one of many free instruction pages on the web. You can also go to a page with the type of formatting that you are looking for and select View, Page Source or Document Source from your browser’s Command Menu Bar.

How do I add a picture to my listing?

1) UPLOAD OPTION: The easiest way to enter a picture in your auction descriptions is to use the Lily Auction's  image uploader located with all the 'Add new Item' forms.  Uploading images is free.

2) URL OPTION: Upload your photo from an existing URL (Internet address).  Or if you have an image already uploaded on a web site, then you will just need to enter the image URL into the "Image URL" field of the "Post New Item" Form. For more details instructions, CLICK HERE.

How can I view all of my auctions?

To view the auctions for a specific seller, go to the "Search Open Auctions" form at the top of the Lily Auction pages. Select the "Username" radio button. Enter the seller's alias in the Search for field. Then click on the "Search Open Auctions" bar.

How do I end my auction before the assigned time?

We highly recommend that each auction be allowed to run its course. In the event you need to cancel your auction, please contact the auctioneer.

Can I change the minimum bid  after the auction has started?

You may change the minimum, after the auction has begun ONLY IF THERE HAVE BEEN NO BIDS OR BUYS on the item. You can do so using the Modify Auction feature located from the "The seller may click here to revise this item" link within your auction. Once a bid or buy is made, you can't change the minimum bid or price. You can also delete your auction through the modify auction feature as long as no bids have been placed. In the event that you need to end your auction after a bid has been placed by another user,  please contact auctioneer.

How long does my auction run?

You can specify how many days an auction will run, from 1 to 14 days. Store items can run for 15, 30 or 60 days. There is no price difference for listing any duration.

How can I find out if an auction has ended?

The item will have a red "closed" sign next to it in the category lists for up to 10 minutes after auction close. After that you will be able to find the closed auctions through the "View Closed Auctions" link at the bottom of the Lily Auction pages. Simply enter your username and password in the form that comes up when you click on the "View Closed Auctions" link.

What happens if my item does not sell?

If your item does not sell, you can re-list it once for free at the close of the auction. You have 2 months from auction close to re-list the item for free. If it doesn't sell for a second time, you may want to come up with a catchier title or add a photo if you did not have one or lower your price.

What is auto-extend?

Auto-extend is one of those features that makes the Lily Auction so special! As you may already know, auctions really heat up in those last minutes. Auto-extend will automatically extend your auction for an additional five minutes if any bids are placed within the last minutes of the auctions closing. This helps to prevent sniping and results in higher returns for the seller.

I lost the buyer's email address. How can I contact him/her again?

Again, through the "View Closed Auctions" link at the bottom of the Lily Auction pages. Simply enter your username and password in the form that comes up when you click on the "View Closed Auctions" link. The winning bidder's email address is displayed on the listing in the Winning Bid History summary. Also, in the event that email notifications have not yet been sent out and the auction had not yet been placed in the closed auction files, the Seller may find the winning bidder's email address through the Seller's MY Lily's Page.

What happens if I can't contact the buyer?

You have several choices: Please try either using snail mail to contact your buyer or calling them on the phone. While the Lily Auction does not record phone numbers, most buyer's phone numbers can be found by using whitepages.com or switchboard.com. You can opt to offer the item to the next highest bidder if there is one and the bidder agrees or you can relist your auction. Before leaving negative feedback on any member who may appear to be a 'deadbeat bidder', it is advised that you please use the Lily Auction Support Form to report the problem. There may be a good reason and we can help to check this out for you.

How do I relist an item?

Again, through the "View Closed Auctions" link at the bottom of the Lily Auction pages. Simply enter your username and password in the form that comes up when you click on the "View Closed Auctions" link. Select the auction that you want to view and 'View' the item. At the bottom of the "Closed Auction" page you will see the "Repost" button. If your auction does not sell you may re-list the item and get a one time credit for the re-listing fee. There are also Quick link (Q & I)  buttons in the closed lists that allow you to repost your item without Viewing the Item.

How do I pay the Lily Auction?

The lily Auction accepts personal checks or certified checks, and money orders. Sorry, we do not accept credit cards at this time. Mailing instructions can be found in your "Sellers Account".

What do I do if the high bidder backs out?

If the high bidder backs out, you can move on to the second highest bidder if you would like. Another option that you have is to re-list the auction. If the high bidder does back out, please email the auctioneer to let us know and don't forget to use Feedback.

After The Auction

The Lily Auction is what is referred to as a "Person to Person" auction. This means that after the end of an auction, the Lily Auction no longer takes part in the transaction between the buyer and the seller. We simply act as a venue to bring the two together. After the close of the auction, both the buyer and seller receive an e-mail informing them that the auction has been completed. This e-mail also contains the personal information of the winning bidder and the auction seller. It is now up to the two parties to close the deal. Below are some tips on how to make the transaction go smoothly.

Sellers: what to do after the auction is over

As the seller, you have a vested interest in completing the transaction with the buyer. Make sure you e-mail the buyer as soon as possible after the end of the auction. (Please allow the buyer at least seven days to get back to you). In the e-mail, it is best to repeat the item number and description. Make sure you inform the buyer of the kinds of payments you accept (check, money order, credit card, etc.) and how long you will hold the item after you receive the payment. It is also important that you tell the buyer how much the shipping will cost and how you will package the item. This will help the buyer decide if they want to pay an extra amount for insurance or express delivery. Don't forget to include your name and address so they know where to send your money. Give the buyer a couple of days to respond to you if you do not hear from them immediately. Some people cannot get to their e-mail everyday. Below are some additional tried and true tips to make sure you get the most out of your selling experience. (These are just tips! You must make an individual decision based on your situation as to how you would like to conduct your sales.)

  • Inform your buyer that if they send you a check, you will hold the item until after the check clears. A bouncing check can be embarrassing for both sides, and this tip will help minimize your losses. With money order payments it is generally safe to mail the item after you receive the payment.

  • Make sure you package the item well. If a buyer receives a poorly packaged item your feedback may suffer. On the other hand, a good packing job will impress the buyer and may entice them to leave you some very flattering feedback.

  • Double check your address before you send it to the buyer. This may sound rather silly but one can never be too cautious. It can save time and hassle for both you and the buyer if the payment is sent to the correct address.

  • Tell the buyer whether or not you have a return policy ahead of time. This could save you some headache down the road.

  • E-mail the buyer on the day that you receive their payment and the day that you send the item. This is just a little bit of common courtesy that will help ensure a satisfied buyer. Satisfied buyers a more likely to leave great feedback.

  • If you do not hear from the buyer within 10 days, or the high bidder backs out, the sale may then considered void. You may want to give the buyer a little extra time. You may elect to relist the item or sell the item to the second highest bidder if they are still interested. In either case, please use the  Lily Auction Support Form. to notify us about the situation so that we can credit your account for the seller's fees.

  • PROTOCOL FOR REQUESTING HELP WHEN YOU DO NOT HEAR FROM YOUR BUYERS OR DO NOT GET PAID: While the responsibility for all transactions is between the Buyer and the Seller, we will always do our best to help you resolve any problems as long as you follow the protocol:

                  1) Report all problems within 10 to 30 days of auction close
                  2) Use the "Support/Questions" link, the Lily Auction Support Form,
to contact us about any question or problem.

  • If this does happen to you, we strongly suggest that you also take advantage of our Feedback System  to give the user a reputation that they deserve. You may leave feedback by going to your Closed Auctions Lists and clicking on the Feedback button found in the lists for the auction in question.

  • Leaving feedback after the transaction is very important. If you are pleased with the transaction, please take the time to leave some positive feedback also by going to your Closed Auctions Lists and clicking on the Feedback button in the appropriate Closed Auction.

  • If you have questions about individual State requirements for shipping plants please go to the following site: Federal & State Plant Quarantine Information

Buyer: what to do after the auction is over.

Sometimes there is nothing more thrilling than finding that special something and winning it in an auction. Within 24 hours after the auction closes, you will receive an e-mail that includes the item number, headline, closing price, and the e-mail address of the seller. If you have not done so already, once you receive this email, contact the seller at your earliest possible convenience. Send the seller your name and address, and inform the seller of any special requirements you have regarding shipping. (Do you want the item insured, etc.?) Ask the seller what types of payment they accept. If you do not hear from the seller immediately, please remember that they may not be able to get to their e-mail every day. Once you receive the seller's information, try to be prompt about sending the payment. NEVER SEND CASH. Expect the entire transaction to take between 7 and 14 days. Below are some additional tried and true tips to make sure you get the most out of your buying experience. (These are just tips! You must make an individual decision based on your situation as to how you would like to conduct your sales.)

  1. If the seller does not accept credit cards, send a money order. This will speed up the process. Checks take up to 7 days to clear, and most buyers will not send an item until a personal check clears. Also, money orders come with insurance against theft and loss. NEVER SEND CASH.

  2. Double check your information before you send it to the seller. Make sure your address is correct and that you have a check or money order to cover both the item and shipping charges.

  3. Inquire as to whether or not the seller has a return policy. This could come in handy if the item does not turn out to be what you expected.

  4. Email the seller after you mail the payment and after you receive the item. Keeping the seller informed during the transaction may prompt them to leave some very flattering feedback on your account.

  5. If you are pleased with the transaction, please take the time to leave some positive feedback on the buyer's account.

  6. If you send payment to the seller but the item is never received (please allow at least 10 days), e-mail the seller to see if it has been sent. If you still do not receive the item, we recommend that you use the Lily Auction Support Form to inform us of the situation. If we cannot get a resolution of the matter for you we suggest that consider contacting your local authorities if you wish to pursue it in the legal system. Please see our fraud policy for more information.

  7. PROTOCOL FOR REQUESTING HELP WHEN YOU DO NOT HEAR FROM YOUR SELLERS: While the responsibility for all transactions is between the Buyer and the Seller, we will always do our best to help you resolve any problems as long as you follow the protocol:

                      1) Report all problems within 10 to 30 days of auction close
                      2) Use the "Support/Questions" link, the Lily Auction Support Form,
to contact us about any question or problem.

  8. Leaving feedback after the transaction is very important. If you are pleased with the transaction, please take the time to leave some positive feedback by going to your Closed Auctions Lists and clicking on the Feedback button in the appropriate Closed Auction.

Leaving Feedback

A Feedback Rating is a measure of the Lily Auction user's reputation in the community. Every registered user at the Lily Auction has a Feedback Rating that is calculated by

Adding 1 point (+1) for each positive comment received.
Subtracting 1 point (-1) for each negative comment received.
Awarding 0 points (0) for each neutral comment received.

The use of the feedback forum is to help promote bidding confidence. All Feedback is left from the "Feedback' Buttons in your Closed Auctions Lists. Except for the exceptions mentioned in the "Rebuttal" paragraph below, you may leave only one 80 character factual feedback remark per item won or sold. This means that if you have left a feedback remark for a user and then have a different transaction with that same user again, you may leave another feedback remark.

Guideline for Buyer Dis-satisfaction:
Negative feedback should only be left as a last resort when all other means have failed. It is best to FIRST contact the seller and try to work out a resolution. The seller may agree to accept a return of the item and provide a refund, depending on the circumstances. Both Buyer and Seller's contact information, and email address, is available in your closed auctions lists, that can be found from the particular closed item that you won. If you cannot get satisfaction, or work out a resolution, between Buyer and Seller, you may use the  Lily Auction Support Form to ask for mediation.

Mediation:
The Lily Auction is not responsible for any problems that may result out of a transaction but we will try to help resolve disputes and offer opinions and make suggestions. When requesting mediation services, always provide the Seller's username and email address, the item number and a description about what went wrong. We will attempt to hear both sides of the dispute before rendering an opinion. If for some reason, one party does not reply to the auctioneer's request for explanation, we may opine in the other parties favor. Please always use the  Lily Auction Support Form to request mediation.

Rebuttal:
Retaliatory feedback is strictly forbidden. A Seller may not leave negative feedback simply because a buyer left him or her  negative feedback.  Try to look at negative feedback as a means to respond and grow. However, you may, in response to a negative feedback remark left in your feedback account by another user, respond with one factual REBUTTAL remark. You may make only one rebuttal remark, in your own feedback record per negative remark made. Please try to make the rebuttal remark in the spirit of reconciliation rather than defensiveness.  Send your 80 Character Rebuttal Remark to the auctioneer. A nasty or slanderous remark made by you, either as as negative feedback or rebuttal remark, could hurt you more than the person you are having the dispute with. Always try to be factual.

You may leave only one 80 character remark, positive, negative or neutral, for a user per transaction. However, there may be circumstances when more than one feedback remarks is required.  Please contact the auctioneer if you believe that you need to leave a more than one feedback remark. Please explain the circumstances as clearly as possible and always include both the member's and your username and registered email addresses, as well as the Item number in question, in your note.

Deadbeat Bidding:
When any user bids in an auction, then wins the auction having bid higher than the sellers reserve as well as higher than any other bidder, and then refuses to pay for the item without an appropriate reason, this user will be considered to be in default. Appropriate reasons would be illness or death in the family, and natural catastrophe such as earthquake, hurricane or tornado, or other catastrophic event. DO NOT BID ON AN ITEM UNLESS YOU INTEND TO PAY FOR IT AT YOUR BID AMOUNT. If a bidder defaults and provides the seller with what is considered an appropriate reason, the seller my still, at his or her discretion, make a single NEUTRAL remark in the bidders feedback stating that the "bidder was unable to complete the transaction". There is no need to explain the details. If a bidder then develops a pattern of default, it will then be recorded. Any user found to show a pattern of deadbeat bidding in the Lily Auction will be suspended from both bidding and selling in the auction.

Misrepresentation:
Sellers should make every effort to represent their items as accurately and in as much detail as possible. However, bidders should never assume things like, for instance, plant size and condition, if it is not stated in the seller's description. If the seller does not state something that you are concerned about, please email the seller and ask about it. Keep records of your email and the sellers response. To leave a seller a negative feedback remark suggesting misrepresentation is a serious accusation and should only be made when there is proof. Please review the Lily Auction Fraud Policy.

General:
Before you place a bid on an item, you probably want to check the seller's feedback rating. Sellers may also want to view the feedback of bidders to better gauge how to deal with specific bidders. You can see a user's feedback either by clicking on the user's name or number next to the user's name, or going to the View Feedback Link

After you conduct a transaction, please remember to leave feedback for the buyer or seller that you dealt with. That will help everyone in the community know what it is like to deal with that user.

Remember, feedback cannot be retracted. Your comments will be attributed with your name and the date. The Lily Auction cannot take responsibility for the comments you post here, and you should be careful about making comments that could be libelous or slanderous. To be safe, make only factual, emotionless comments.
